1.Read about metres and answer the questions.
For thousands of years people used different ways to measure things.
Some people measured things using the size of their king's foot or hand.
When the king died, they used the new king's foot, and so on.
This wasn't a very good way to measure things,
because it wasn't always clear how big or small a thing really was.
People all over the world used the sun and the moon to measure time.
However, they all had different numbers of days in a week
and different numbers of hours in a day.
In 1584,a scientist called Simon Steve nius
started to think about a set of measures which used the number ten,
but no one was interested in his ideas.
About two hundred years later,
a group of scientists in France decided to use his ideas.
They thought of ways to measure everything using ten.
Among their ideas were some that weren't popular.
One was a new clock which had ten hours a day.
The other was a new calendar which had ten days a week.
The scientists agreed to use metres to measure length
and they worked out how long a metre should be.
Then they decided to call a hundredth of a metre a centimetre
and a thousand metres a kilometre.

1.Listen to Xiaoling talking to a new teacher,Mr Adams, about schools
and say if the sentences are true (T) or false (F).
are schools in China the same as school sin other countries that you've visited?
Mr Adams:I think that every school is a little different.
The school that I was at before, for example, was quite unusual.
Mr Adams:The students came from all over the world.
They studied many of the same subjects that you yourself take,
but they studied by themselves a lot of the time, without a teacher.
They also did special things.
Xiaoling:What kinds of special things?
Mr Adams:Well, they helped younger students at the school with their school work
and they visited old people who didn't have any children or grandchildren.
This taught them as much about themselves as about other people.
Mr Adams:They also took part in many difficult and dangerous sports,
such as rock climbing.
However, the sport itself was not the most important thing.
The most important thing was learning to help each other when they were frightened.
Xiaoling:Studying by yourself,helping people,rock climbing.
it certainly sounds different!

which she calls'Hotcotton' because it changes colour when you get too hot.
It is now used in many hospitals in China.
Last August, when Meimei was visiting her friends Sam and Jane in London,
she thought of another invention.
The three friends were walking beside the River Thames
and it started to rain They didn't have umbrellas
but they were wearing hats.'We need,'said Meimei to herself,
a hat that turns into an umbrella!'
Now you can find her'Umbrellahat' in many stores.
At the hospital the doctors often ask Meimei for ideas.
Recently,Dr Zhang, who works with people with broken bones,
asked her for a cheap, easy way to stop broken bones from moving.
Meimei had just come back from a trip to Guilin.
She had ridden a bicycle around the city and mended one of its tyres.
'Could I use air to hold the bones together?'she asked herself.
She made a special kind of bandage, put it round her leg and filled it with air.
It was very strongand it held the bones very well.
She called her new invention 'Airhold'.

Read about a boy who loved mathematics and answer the questions.
If you came from a poor family and couldn't go to a good school,
could one book change your life?
It did for Srinivasa Ramanujan,a bright young Indian boy.
When he was 15 years old,he found a book about mathematics.
It wasn't an ordinary mathematics book.
It was a special book with 6,000 very difficult problems.
While Srinivasa's friends played football on the dirt road in front of his house,
he worked out the answers to these problems.
He answered them all by himself without any help from anyone else.
Then he thought of new problems and answered them, too.
Soon,he was better at mathematics than all of his teachers.
A year later,Srinivasa was invited to study at university,
even though he was really too young.
However,he failed most of his exams.
Because he was only interested in mathematics
and didn't care enough about his other subjects.
He had to leave university but he kept thinking about mathematics.
He wrote about his ideas and sent his work to magazines.
A British mathematician read his work and started writing letters to him
Later he invited Srinivasa to go to England to study and work.
In England, people didn't care whether Srinivasa was good at other subjects or not
By the time he was 30,Srinivasa Ramanujan,
a poor boy who preferred mathematics to playing football,
had became one of the world's most famous mathematicians.
2.Listen to a talk about what different people do best and fill in the table.
Are you good at learning some things by yourself, but not others?
Do you find it easy to understand art,for example, but not maths?
If you do,don't be surprised.
Everyone's mind is different
and most people are better at some things than others.
Hardly anyone is good at everything.
Many famous people were good at one thing but poor at others.
Mozart was good at music but not very good at maths he never had enough money
Einstein was good at maths and writing.
He also played the violin but most people say that he wasn't very good at that.
Max Berlitz's parents and grandparents were maths teachers
but he was poor at maths.
He was good at languages. He started a school that taught languages.
Now many books and thousands of schools use his ideas.
George Schaller has worked all over the world studying animals.
In China,he studied pandas.
He said that when he was a boy,
he always liked being outside looking at plants and animals.
Now this is his job.
When Tiger Woods was a baby, his father used to play golf in front of him.
His father did everything he could to make his son like golf.
Now his son is the best golf player in the world.
