1.Mr and Mrs Zhou talked about holidays on a TV programme.
Read and answer the questions.
I watched a TV programme about two teachers,
Mr and Mrs Zhou.
They had visited several countries round the world
to see the people celebrating their special days,
for example,Valentine's Day.
They said that they had learned about many different holidays
during their trip.
Mrs Zhou said that Valentine's day ahd been a holiday
long before people started giving red paper hearts
to show their love.
She said that Valentine's Day had started with a love letter
from a boy named Valentine.
Mrs Zhou also talked about Halloween.
She said that Halloween had started
as a festival in Europe a long time ago.
Today,children dress in strange clothes
to frighten people.
They may also ask people for sweets.
Mr Zhou told us about another special day
called Mid-Summer's Day.
He said that 21 June had been celebrated for thousands of years
because it is the longest day of the year.
He said that,on this day,
people collect wood and build large fires.
The fires burn all night.
Some people also wear flowers round their necks.
Mr and Mrs Zhou said that some holidays
from other countries were now popular in China, too.

1.Ben and Zhenhui
are planning a dragon boat race for their schools.
Listen and number their notes.
Mr Zhang told me that we must tell everyone what to do,
so that we'll all have fun and no one will get hurt.
What do you mean by'tell everyone what to do'?
Zhenhui:Well,we have to be polite
but people must be told what they should and shouldn't do.
For example, the races must start on time
so we must tell everyone not to be late.
Ben:The drums may help.
Zhenhui:I'm sorry,I don't follow you.
Ben:Everyone will be quiet
and listen when they hear the drums.
I think I'd better write all this down.
Would you pass me my bag, please,
and could you lend me a pen?
Zhenhui:Of course.Here,take this one.
So,we've got 'Please be on time for your race.'
Well,we must ask people to line up
and wait for their turn.
Yes,and we ought to ask them not to rush or push.
Last year, someone almost fell in the water
because other people were pushing.
Also,we'd better ask parents not to smoke.
That can be dangerous,too.
What about asking for'no noise,please'?
Zhenhui:Oh,no!Dragon boat races are very noisy!
We want everyone to shout and have fun!

3.Read a story about special holiday foods
and then fill in the blanks
to complete a menu for Thanksgiving dinner.
Special foods for special days
Almost every holiday or special day has
its own special food.
At Mid-Autumn Festival,we eat moon cakes
and at Dragon Boat Festival,we eat zongzi.
At Christmas,many people eat turkey
although in England,a few people still eat goose.
At some festivals,like Buddha's Birthday,
many people eat only vegetable.
At some festivals,
the special food is not eaten.
in Spain,during the orange festival,
people throw oranges at each other,
and in Italy,at one of their festivals,
they throw tomatoes!
Many festivals are held in autumn.
the mid-autumn holiday is called Thankgiving.
Canadians eat many kinds of food on this holiday
but turkey has always been the most important dish.
Before the turkey, people may have soup.
The soup is served with fresh bread.
After the soup,
there many be some cold cabbage with apples.
The turkey is served with several vegetables,
such as carrots and potatoes.
After the turkey comes the best part:
pumpking pie or apple pie!
These are served with ice-cream.
At the end of the dinner,
tea and coffee are served.
1.Read a story about three weddings
and answer the questions.
Yesterday,I got a letter from Ben Harris.
He said that he had been to three weddings this summer.
The first was in Italy,
the second was in Canada
and the third was in Bali.
He said that all the weddings had been quite different.
In Italy, the wedding was held in a big church.
The bride wore a long white dress.
Ben said that the wedding had been held in July
because May and August were unlucky months for weddings.
Before the wedding day,
both the bride and groom's families had had several parties
for their relatives and friends with lots of food.
There was another big meal after the wedding, too.
Ben said that he had counted fourteen different dishes!
During the meal,
the bride and groom broke a glass.
Then they counted the pieces
to see how many years they would be together.
Ben went to a wedding in a big old house.
A man made a speech
and people sang a few beautiful songs.
The bride wore a nice pick dress.
After the guests had finished a big lunch
they each threw a handful of rice over the bride aand groom
to wish them good luch
and lots of children.
The third wedding was in Bali.
Unlike the ones in Italy and Canada,
this one was held on a beach.
The bride and the groom
both wore colourful clothes and hats.
Like the other weddings,
there was a big meal.
There was also dancing and lots of music.
Ben said that he had really
enjoyed going to such different weddings!
2.Listen to Ben talking about special presents
for married people and fill in the table.
At the wedding in Canada,
my grandmother told me
that she had been married for fifty years.
She also said
that she had been given many different kinds of presents
during those years.
After she had been married for one year,
she was given something made of paper.
It was a love letter from her husband.
After the second year,
she was given something made of cotton.
It was a large piece of green and blue cloth
and she made a beautiful dress for herself.
The third year,
she received leather shoes
and the fourth year,
she got flowers-beautiful red roses.
It has been 46 years since that day
but she can still remember how wonderful those roses smelled.
The fifth year,
she received a wooden box for her old watch.
The sixth year,
she got sweets-some chocolate
-and the seventh year,wool.
She used the wool to make a warm winter sweater.
The 25th year after she was married,
she was given something silver.
It was a new silver watch.
Her husband died just before the 50th year of their marriage.
but her children and grandchildren gave her something gold.
